How to Make a Cute Sparkley Birthday Card!

…Or, how to use Elizabeth Crafts Designs Glitter Ritz Highlight Glitter.  Hi friends!  Here’s a tutorial on how to make this pink polka dot birthday card using the layering method I mentioned last week, and this special glitter that is made so that you can actually color on it!

I started with 2-inch-wide Scor-Tape I got from Blitsy a few weeks ago. Elizabeth Crafts also sells this same item under the name, Be Creative Tape.  This is a double-sided tape that seems to work wonders with the Glitter Ritz.  I measured a 4 inch piece since I knew that would be the dimensions of my top layer…2×4 inches.

Then I decided it was too messy to cut like that, so I stuck the sticky side directly to my white card stock that was already measured and cut, and then trimmed the tape off the roll.

Next, I peeled off the backing to the second sticky side of tape

Time for the Glitter Ritz!  I applied this liberally and then smooshed it down really well with my fingers before shaking and tapping off the excess.

Okay…this part is important.  After all the excess glitter is removed, you MUST burnish the glitter into the tape and card stock with your fingers.  I hold the card stock at one end and push away from me.  I’ve noticed if I burnish towards me, the card stock tends to buckle and fold or crinkle.  As the glitter gets pushed down into the tape, it starts to get super shiny!  It’s a little hard to see, but the pic above shows the right half of the card stock already burnished, and you can see how much more glittery it looks.  The more you burnish, the shinier it becomes.  Plus you will have virtually no glitter flaking off or getting on your markers later.

Next, I used some Elizabeth Crafts Designs Peel Off Stickers.  These come in tons of different designs, and are super thin, so they make a nice outline to your coloring.  Here you’ll see me using my fingers, but officially, you’re supposed to use tweezers.  I just have a tough time with them personally!

Place your sticker where you would like it to be, and then gently press it into the glitter.  At this point, I turn my card stock over and rub it really good to get a firm stick.  I’ve noticed that doing this prevents the markers from bleeding under the lines of the sticker.

For coloring, I used Bic Mark-It’s.  I hear Copics or any other alcohol markers will work too.  I’ve even used water-based markers with good results.  The only thing I’ve tried that I don’t recommend is paint markers.  The paint tends to cover the glitter rather than seep into it, so you lose a lot of shine.

Now, for the rest of the card.   I ran into some logistics at this point.  I needed the outside edges of my card stock to be taped and glittered, but didn’t want to waste all that it would take to cover the pieces, since you would only be seeing the outside 1/2 inch of each piece of card.  What I finally did is place the two larger pieces of card stock together, and then center the 2 inch wide tape over them and stick down.

I did this on all four sides…

cutting each side apart as I went.  The tape is so sticky, it would have been hard to cut it before it was attached to something.

More glitter, more burnishing, and then glittery fingers!

Following the directions of the tutorial linked above, I temporarily attached my three pieces of white card stock together, centered inside each other, and then went to town stamping polka dots!   I’ve never seen the Glitter Ritz be stamped on before, but I figured if it would accept ink from a pen, why not from a stamp pad. It worked!  I used Quick Quotes Powder Puff Chalking Inks to do the deed.  I STRONGLY suggest you try this on a glittered scrap first.

After I had stamped to my heart’s content, I peeled the three glittered layers apart, and then attached each to it’s own pretty pink mat.

Here’s what they looked like before they were attached all together.

Here’s a close-up with the flash on to give you an idea of the glitter and sparkle.  I wish you could see it in person!  A little happy birthday sentiment at the top from the Birthday Wishes collection by JME Creations …

…and my card is complete!!!  I hope you enjoyed the tute.  I know it’s bright, but this turned out to be one of my favorite cards EVER!

I’m linking my card to DL Art’s Happy Birthday Linky Party.  Happy Birthday Diana!
